It wasn't a viper, it had a long name, and was long and skinny.

The thing to keep in mind is that there are many different kinds of vipers. Rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths are all vipers. There are eyelash vipers and lancehead vipers in South America, saw scaled vipers, gaboon vipers and rhinoceros vipers in Africa, and Russell's vipers in Asia. And of course, there are many more I didn't name, such as temple pit vipers and many other small pit vipers. Saw scaled vipers and Russell's vipers kill more people than any other snakes in the world, according to National Geographic. There are several dozen different species of vipers, at least, with varying levels of toxicity as far as venom is concerned.

Could the V been part of a scientific name? Herpetologists like to use scientific name rather than common names. I can think of a few snakes with more toxic venom, Vipera ammodytes Long-nosed viper this snake has potentially more lethal venom then the Black mamba. This is the only "V" snake I could find with this potential.
