Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page - The Yardbirds
Stephen Stills and Neil Young - Buffalo Springfield
Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins - Genesis
Todd Rundgren - The Nazz
Ted Nugent - The Amboy Dukes
Joe Walsh - The James Gang
Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley and Glen Frey - Stone Poneys
Steve Winwood - Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith
Natalie Merchant - 10,000 Maniacs
Dave Mason - Traffic
Ronnie James Dio - Rainbow and Black Sabbath. Like Oz, his first couple of solo albums were big hits in the 80's.
Janis Joplin - Big Brother and the Holding Company.
Btw, most of Paul McCartney's albums in the '70's were not originally listed under his name but as Wings.

So far the only really good answers to this have been:
Dion (DiMucci)- formerly of Dion and the Belmonts (50s doowop act)
Billy Joel- was in reasonably successful regional New Jersey band The Hassles..made 2 albums for a national label (blanking out on which one) before going solo
Rob Zombie- definitely bigger on his own than with White Zombie
Peter Gabriel- Genesis was more of a "cult" act. Really only HUGE prog rock fans are into their Gabriel era stuff...they didn't become big commercially until the Phil Collins years. Gabriel however managed to straddle the "artsy" and pop line solo and became more successful on his own IMHO.
Ozzy is debatable-Very successful but so was Sabbath
Sting likewise-He's done well but BETTER than The Police? Not so sure about that..

It's hard without naming pop... I immediately thought of Phil Collins, George Michael, Justin Timberlake. Rob Zombie. Peter Gabriel. Eric Clapton's a good one!
This is a perfect one: At the Drive In broke up and half formed The Mars Volta and the other half made Sparta. That is a perfect example.
What about Michael Jackson? Another perfect example. Left The Jackson Five and became the "King of Pop".
Oh, and definately Ozzy. Sorry, Ozzy *has* become bigger than Black Sabbath.
Your next question should be who's had a huge solo success yet still not eclipsed their band... Each of the Beatles could be claimed. John Lennon alone wrote some of the greatest songs of the seventies, yet still doesn't eclipse his earlier work.
Or maybe ask what lead singers failed miserably when they tried to go solo. Anyone Remember Dexy's Midnight Runners? Because you sure as hell don't remember Kevin Rowland's solo work.

Neil Young would be a good example, others are:
- Eric Clapton - Cream/ Yardbirds
- Peter Gabriel - Genesis
- Elton John - Bluesology
- Buddy Guy - Muddy Waters Band
- Paul Rodgers - Bad Company
- Paul McCartney - The Beatles (I know how huge the Beatles are but Paul has come close atleast)
- John Lennon - The Beatles (Same as Paul, but his death definitely cut his career short)
- John Fogerty - CCR
- Joe Walsh - James Gang
- Peter Frampton - Humble Pie
- Rod Stewart - Jeff Beck Group/ Long John Baldry
- Jeff Beck - The Yardbirds
- Carlos Santana - Santana (just as famous for solo work as group)
- David Lee Roth - Van Halen
- Sammy Hagar - Van Halen
- Van Morrison - Them
I know there is more but that is about all I can think of. However, some might make more sense than others because of the time period the bands were famous in and when their solo careers took off.

Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Ozzy Osbourne, Eric Clapton, and Sting all had the same amount or more success than their bands.

I think Enya was more successful than her family band Clannad. She was the one who sang the hit Orinoco Flow ("Sail away, sail away, sail away...") And she was the one who sang May it Be, the song playing during the credits of the first Lord of the Rings movie.
