It really depends on the sector of the United you would want to work with.
Projects for bodies like UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) , UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), and UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency) usually require heads of the projects to be a native citizen of the country. For example, a UNHCR project in Northen Uganda would be headed by a Ugandan citizen. General volunteers, however, could be from any country. You would have to visit your local United Nations office or HQ to find volunteer projects in your country or abroad.
People are invited to become United Nations Ambassadors of Goodwill (like Angelina Jolie) if they're well-known for their involvement in issues that pertain to the certain organization they're joing. Angelina Jolie became the Ambassador for UNHCR because she was known for her work with refugees and also because three of her children were refugees.

Membership of the United Nations Organization(UNO) is open to nation-states and not to persons or people. Membership can be acquired through application by nations that wish to join the UNO. It is however, pertinent to point out that, the UNO from time to time select persons who have distinguished themselves in their chosen career to serve as UN ambassadors to assist in propagating the mandate of the UNO.

#1 You have to hate your own country.
#2 You have to hate religious ideals.
#3 You have to be willing to waste your time talking to people who don't give a damn about the liberal-socialist feces that you have been commissioned to spew.
#3 You have to be willing to sit back and watch social injustices happen, while your superiors write "resolutions" and order you to expend your energy against those who are willing to take strong measures to save lives from those injustices.
