Change of state is a physical change.
The change from liquid to solid gives off heat.
That is why the atmosphere warms when it starts to snow.
The change from gas to liquid also releases heat.

There is some question as to whether when a compound goes into solution and gives off heat is totally physical.
When NaOH is added to water, the water gets hot.
