I recently purchased 2 FBTS, from petsmart, was helped by a woman who owned the toads herself so i felt comfortable with her picking out what i needed. She provided me with a clip on lamp and a 75W basking bulb. She said all i need to do is place the lamp right on the tank surface in one corner of land. After doing much research im finding that the temps its providing ( 95-100+ degrees) are too high? Yet i went back to the store, every employee claims its perfectly fine...I decided to switch the bulbs for more standard looking Bulbs down to 60 watt, and now my overall temp is about 80 degrees...what's the deal with these guys? I mean a lot of the research online says no heat lamp is even neeeded but literally every single employee at the store including a girl who had these toads for years, said even the 75W was fine...Am i alright now with the 60W and temps around 80 humidity around 60%? Also, are these guy's supposed to be active? they dont move too much...my ACFS move around more...

Fire bellies don't really need any supplemental heating or lighting. Ambient room lighting & temps are fine. They prefer cool & dark conditions in the wild.

Petsmart is one of the WORST places to get herp advice (yahoo answers is another)

Unfortunately many pet store employees are trained by the company, and often they give very poor care info. Many pet stores will try to tell you Calci-sand or walnut chips are good substrates for reptiles--and they are deadly! Please listen to the experts in the field--those that have been doing this and breeding successfully for a number of years.

Temperature: Fire-bellied toads are tolerant of a wide range of temperatures which is one of the reasons they make good captives. Normal daytime temperatures should range from 72F to 78F (22C to 26C), and can drop at night. Cool temperatures are tolerated well, and occasional drops down to 60F (16C) don’t present a problem. Avoid temperatures above 85F (29C). A low wattage incandescent light bulb can be placed over the land section of the cage during the day to create a warm area for the toads, and a submersible aquarium heater can be used to heat the water if needed

Hello, I didn't use a light for my toads, and they were very healthy! I had 3 Fire Belly Toads. When it got too cold in my room I would just put a normal light, fish light for my Betta fish, ontop of the tank in the middle. Enjoy!
