A new band teacher was hired this year, and high school students (grades 9-12) have been being very disrespectful and inconsiderate during class, so I have been talking to her briefly. She is an absolutely wonderful teacher, and it's just because she's new, young (23 years old), and pushes us to reach potential that students are behaving unacceptably. Things have changed and are going somewhat better now.

I'm 15, and never have really fit among my age group, but of course I have a few friends my age.

Would it be odd to become friends with this teacher? She seems to enjoy talking to me and asks me questions often about students, etc...

What do you think?

No, you can be friends with your teacher. You can be friends if she likes talking to you then, keep on talking, she can write a letter of recommendation for you in the future for jobs and college so keep up the friendship. Plus it is always good to have an other adult to talk to other than your parents sometimes. I'm in college and I hang out sometimes with my English professor, she is 6 years older than me and we hit it off and now I give her books for her to teach in her classes. Nothing wrong with a friendship.

That would be wildly inappropriate I think, and others will agree, that this type of "relationship" would have some quite immoral and varyingly inappropriate connotations, which are not easily explained or excused, and compromises greatly her position as a teacher, as it cannot be reconciled with her "duties" to you as a "friend". I think she would have some expectations of you that you may not be ready for, and clearly she has some desires which are going to be uncomfortable for both of you, when she expresses them. My advice is to keep things quite professional and not go down that road... good luck!
