I need a modern (or young-ish) Christmas song to sing at a church concert thingy. It doesn't have to be really religious, because its not a mass, but it obviously can't mention profanity.

Yes, early n the season, I know, but we need to have it in by mid-October.

I was thinking something made in the 1950's-present, or a classic that can be applied to young people, because a lot of great classics only apply to adults (I'll Be Home for Christmas). Likewise, nothing Rudolph-esce, for little kids.

If you want my vocal range, I'm pretty flexible; no song entirely at a very low range or entirely at a high range.

Thanks in advancee.

The Christmas Song Mel Torme

Maybe one of the non-instrumentals from Trans-Siberian Orchestra? The group is current, and they add a bit of rock to Christmas songs, but in good taste. There are several good ones.

My favorite is "Old City Bar" which isn't bad lyric-wise but you can see if you feel comfortable singing it in your church. Maybe also "The Music Box" or "An Angel Came Down/An Angel Returned".

You can check out the lyrics to all their songs at the source below. They also have a tour each winter of the songs on one of their Christmas albums - you can check the same website to see if they're coming close to you.

"Come On Ring Those Bells"
http://www.christmas-carols.net/carols/ring-those-bells.html

Everybody likes to take a holiday
Everybody likes to take a rest
Spending time together with the family
Sharing lots of love and happiness.

Come on, ring those bells,
Light the Christmas tree,
Jesus is the king
Born for you and me.
Come on, ring those bells,
Every-body say,
Jesus, we remember
This your birthday.

Celebrations come because of something good.
Celebrations we love to recall
Mary had a baby boy in Bethlehem
the greatest celebration of all.

Come on, ring those bells,
Light the Christmas tree,
Jesus is the King
Born for you and me.
Come on, ring those bells,
Every-body say,
Jesus, we remember
This your birthday.

I heard this song many years ago, but it does bring back the part of remembering Christmas as a special time not only for families and friends, but remembering the why Christmas is so special.
You can hear it you tube....

So many ppl are trying to avoid mentioning Christ in Christmas these days. If you are singing in church, it should be a song that includes Christ. What Child is THis? (also known as Greensleeves) is a beautiful, thoughtful Christmas song.

"all i want for christmas is you" - mariah carey but i guess that might not be so appropriate for church! (not that it's bad lol)

how about "Merry Christmas, Happy HOlidays" by NSYNC

uhmmm....

Blue Christmas - Elvis

Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Christina Aguilera

Please Come Home for Christmas - The Eagles

OH Holy Night - Mariah Carey

Santa Baby - Marilyn Monroe

Maybe some of them aren't so modern, but youc ould totally put your own twist on an older fashioned song!!

happy holidays!!

"More Than A Child"
(Lawrence Keith Holder)

1. More than a child born in the hay,
Jesus, my Lord, on that first Christmas day.
More than the son of a carpenter man;
You carried the weight of the world in Your hand.

For You are the Hope of my soul,
All that I see, and all that I know.
In You, there is peace in my life,
For one day You came, as angels proclaimed,
The Light of the world for us all!

2. More than a star shining that night,
More than the shepherds amazed by the sight,
More than three wise men with riches of gold;
You, the Messiah, the prophets foretold

Would come, bringing newness and life,
Freedom from sin, deliv'rance from strife.
In You, there is peace evermore,
For one day You came, as angels proclaimed,
The Light of the world for us all.
Yes, one day You came, as angels proclaimed,
Redeemer and Lord of us all!

I never heard that one before. I had to play it on youtube for an answer. It is a very sweet song. Glad to find a new song out there, or at least one I've never heard before.

How about Collin Raye's "what if jesus comes back like that?"

Here are athe lyerics:

He came to town on an old freight train
He jumped off in the pouring rain
Everyone said he's insane
Just a low down no account hobo

He made his bed beneath the county bridge
The town folks said hay that's not his
They signed a petition they're gonna get rid
of that white trash lo down no count

First course:
What if Jesus comes back like that
On an old freight train in a hobo hat
Will we let him in or turn our back
What if jesus comes back like that
Hey what if jesus comes back like that

Born with a habit of drug abuse
She couldn't help what her moma used
It wasn't like she got to choose
Now she's laying there all alone

Got a monkey on her back
Nurses say they never saw a smile like that
Doctors say she might stand a chance
If someone takes her home

Course two:
What if jesus comes back like that
Two months early and hooked on crack
Will we let him in or turn our back
What if jesus comes back like that
Oh what if jesus comes back like that

Bridge:
Nobody said life is fair
We've all got a cross to bear
When it gets a little hard to care
Just think of Jesus hanging thre

He came to town on a cold dark night
A single star his only light
The baby born that silent night
A manger for his bed

Last course:
What if jesus comes back like that
Where will he find our hearts are at
Will he let us in or turn his back
Hey what if jesus comes back like that
Yea what if jesus comes back like that
Will he cry when he sees where our hearts are at
Will he let us in or turn his back
Hey what if jesus comes back like that
Oh what if jesus comes back like that

Perhaps taking a classic carol and turning into a jazz or blues rendition?
