Fish DO take in air
or at least, the oxygen that's in the water!

Water (H2O) is made up of 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The fish's gills extract the oxygen from the water, but most do not "breathe" like we do.

Some fish can breath air.

All fish breathe oxygen. The gills take in oxygen that is in the water.

What mostly everybody is saying is right. ^^; Some fish can take air directly, other fishes need to process water through their gills to squeeze the air from it. But they still need to be in the water. >>; If not, they'll dry out.

Some fish actually do breathe air. Labyrinth fishes such as bettas and gouramis come up to the surface to breathe air. But they still have gills and can still live underwater.

Anabantids (bettas and gouramis, and a few others, have a labyrinth system for taking oxygen from the air, though they also get it from water through their gills. Corydoras catfish, some other types of catfish, carp, goldfish, and koi also supplement with oxygen from the air.

bettas and other labyrinth fishes will take air directly from the surface.

other fishes need to push water through their gills in order to get oxygen.

Basically the labyrinth organ allows the fish to breathe like humans. Dont get me wrong, they still have gills though.

Well, i wouldn't say your sister is stupid, because she has a valid point

like others pointed already out, labyrinth fish like a betta and gouramis do come up for air

And all the other fish, which don't have a labyrinth organ will take up oxygen throught their gills

Hope that helps
good luck
