Bill Gates's accomplishments

At Lakeside Private School he developed an early interest in computer science. He programmed a class scheduling program for the school and got paid $4,200.

While working at Computer Center Corp. (what he called C-Cubed), he was responsible for what was the first computer virus. He was kept away from computers for his entire junior year.

While in high school, Bill and his friends started Traf-O-Data. They earned $20,000 for analyzing traffic patterns. That was a lot of money in the 60’s. Bill and three other friends formed Lakeside Programming Group (1971-1974). They programmed software and learned the BASIC and FORTRAN computer languages.

While walking through Harvard Square one day, he saw a Popular Electronics magazine ad hanging on the wall for the Altair 8800. It cost $400 and could be assembled by yourself. There wasn’t any software out yet. Gates immediately called the company’s C.E.O. They were going to meet at the headquarters in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bill immediately dropped out of college and drove to Albuquerque.

They made software for them until they went out of business. They moved to Seattle, Washington and started working with bigger companies, Apple, Tandy and Commodore computers. In 1997, IBM contacted them about developing an operating system. Gates bought a small operating system, Q-DOS. He improved it and renamed it MS-DOS. Microsoft had arrived.
