The democrats are trying to institute socialism in this country. They want to tax the people with higher incomes more, they want a universal health care, and they want everyone to be middle class. That is just appaling. Everyone has an equal chance to go to college and graduate schools to make something of themselves. Or just start their own business. The people that are on the bottom in our society are just plain lazy. It doesnt matter what your background is, you can become someone. The democrats believe in taxing the people who had to work hard to have an income of $250,000 or more a year, because some folks are lazy and rely on food stamps. I am now an independent and I hope you will become one too.

I did not have it easy, actually. But ANYONE can take out a loan and pay it after they graduate. Difference between me and some lazy bum is that I have the determination and ambition to succeed in life.

I hate to break this to you, but "making it in life" is not simply tied to one's income. In fact, I would say that is a narrow and limited view of American society.

Building a society where one can attend college and pursue worthy causes, along with lucrative professions, and still be able to afford basic health care and maintain a decent standard of living is the true American way.

As for your tirade against the middle class, look up some basic household earnings stats - it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out the widening gulf between the richest echelons of executive America and those with average means.

I'm far from espousing socialism here, I'm merely pointing out the obtuse argument you have presented here.

LOL. I do have to say I am in full agreement with most statments. I do believe it is harder for some to go to college then others, but I will never say it is impossible. Something needs to be done, but neither party has any idea of what. The only thing I can think of is getting my hands dirty and trying to help alot of those kids who think they are hopeless. I did not grow up with money and am graduating from college in december, with a butt load of loans to pay off, but that peice of paper is going to be worth it becuase Im setting a future for my kids. Turning the country into a socialist country is NOT the answer. But niether is losing my vote for and independent candidate. I do have to say I vote republican, not sure who I will vote for this year due to the lack of conviction in any of those running. I guess we'll have to see. I just hope people start to see what your saying here. If we wanted socialism we would have let Stalin take over. :-)

What does the rest of your answer have to do with being a liberal?

Liberals oppose socialism. Liberal economics is based on laissez-faire -- free market economy. Socialism is the direct opposite of that.

Yes, the Democratic party has largely become socialist in its goals -- but that means the Democrats have also largely abandoned their liberal roots.

Saying you are no longer a liberal means you are not longer a supporter of individual freedom, civil liberties, and the rights of the minorities to exist without oppression to conform.

I completely agree that the Democrats have gone off in the wrong direction -- but why should that change your personal beliefs in protecting civil liberties and freedoms?

It would be really nice if the world worked the way you say it does. Unfortunately, anyone can't go to college and grad school because tuition keeps going up. You need funding to start your own business, and those with higher incomes already were taxed at higher rates until Bush tax cuts. It would be great country if everyone were middle class and had health insurance.
Wait until you have to make it on lowering wages and no health care.

apparently youve never struggled with anything in your life. Youve probably been handed everything on a silver platter. I agree that there is alot of opportunity for people. Much more than there used to be, but its not available to everyone. This doesnt just go for those people who are lower income either. I came from a middle class family. When i filled out the fafsa, they offered me 2,000 for a student loan. This is nothing compared to the costs of tuition, book, and dorms. On paper it looks like we make a fair amount of money, but the FAFSA fails to look at hidden costs which families have. For instance, my family is helping pay medical expenses for my grandfather. His 2 battles with cancer and a heart attack werent cheap.
I agree there are opportunities for lower income families, but there is a limited number of them. They may all qualify, but only a few will get the scholarships or grants.
There is alot of factors you ARENT looking at. You believe what you want, but dont look down on people who youve probably never even associated with. There are situations that lead people to struggle in life. They may have the means but not the way, or the way but not the means. I had to settle for going to a lower ranking school becuase i couldnt afford the costs of the better ones. Many people have personal circumstances that prevent them from furthering their education (the most important factor in getting rich). So before you judge people, learn to try to look from both sides of the story. Just becuase you have had it easy... doesnt mean everyone else has.

you've clearly never been to the inner city... you should go there sometimes...

do you really think they had the same opportunities you did? try going to a school there...

you've never been a liberal in your life, you may have thought you were, but you clearly never really understood what you were supporting... you don't even understand how the world works now

EDIT: how do you make good enough grades for college when you have to quit school to support your family?

and even if you were in school... the books are 50 years old and the teachers are the worst out there?

I hate to tell you this but not all Repubs are conservative and not all Democrates are LIberals.
But when it comes to What you are taking about you got to go with what ever party benfits you.Whats refered to as fiscal conservatism only benfits the wealthy so if you are wealthy I think you should vote for politcans who will benfit you.
But I would like to ask what is it about you that makes you conservative or Liberal?

Good for you. Republicans are hard working and want to take care of themselves. The big difference is that the Republicans don't think you should have to work and pay high taxes to support your bum neighbor because he doesn't like to work and plays video games all day. That's the difference.

Why are so many individuals who use Yahoo Answers stuck on using the labels "Liberal" and "Conservative?"

I have friends on either side and no two of them are alike regardless of their parties.

I think it's just easy, mindless labeling. I see we are not advancing much, at least on this site.
