The story is that you can stand a raw egg on end during an equinox (usually the Vernal Equinox is specified). And ONLY then. There are various explanations given for this supposed phenomenon, usually something having to do with the way the Earth and Sun line up on this one day (or two days).

In fact, this story is a myth.

Though it is certainly somewhat difficult, it is never impossible - it just takes practice. On any day in the year.

You can make an egg stand on end anywhere along the equator. The centrifugal force exerted by the Earths rotation is greatest at the equater and causes objects to be pulled away from Earths center. This makes objects there resist the force of gravity slightly making the objects weigh a little less and making them easier to balance. Centrifugal force also causes Earth to bulge at the equator and people to stay on rollercoaster when their train goes through loops.

One can make an egg stand on end as long as you have a flat, level surface and some patience. The shell has tiny dimples and bumps all over it, and given sufficient effort, you will be able to stand it on end regardless of the time of year.

If you live in the western hemisphere, during fall, the north and south poles line up to point at the moon 3 days in the season.
The magnetic fields are altered at certain moments around 8 o'clock. thus, the eggs pointing north, stand straight up.
