Chlorine gas is yellow green.
Chloride salts of elements in column 1 and 2 are white.
NaCl=white
salts of transition metals are colored.
CuCl2=blue

It is obvious that it is white. If you have NaCl, that is white. The reason is that sodium and chloride contribute no "color" to the compound. CuCl2 is green. This is because the copper imparts the green color, while Cl- is "white." CoCl2 is purple. Same reason.
