Well, I was just told, write an essay on the following question.

What was Orwell's purpose for the writing of this book?

I know it was a warning. But I don't know how to expand that into an entire essay.

If you cannot read the book (you should, as it's a classic, and a fantastic book!), then here are some suggestions:

first, check out the essay written by Orwell at the provided link entitled "Why I Write." It should provide some clarification as to what he wanted to convey through his writing;

second, check out the Sparknotes synopsis and summaries of the book;

finally, read section 2.2 (Orwell's Inspiration) for the entry in Wikipedia, also provided as a link here.

Good luck!

The title came from the idea of a "futuristic society" but not too far into the future. Orwell wrote it in 1948, and just juxtaposed the last two digits.

It is a cautionary tale of a communist society gone awry. (This book should go hand in hand with Animal Farm). Whole societies are being told what to think (2+2=5) even though individual thought should reign on common sense issues. The media broadcasts what they want the people to believe and endorse (at one point, the media issues a statement that they are at war with a continent, and the next day, they reverse their position).

There is nowhere in this society where one can go to truly be alone and free to think what one wants.

Does this sound a little familiar? The media feeds you political thoughts. The idiot box is always on somewhere, even in waiting rooms. There are traffic lights that take your picture if you speed. Everyone is feeding you an opinion. And if you type certain words into the computer together or say them on the phone, a system called Echelon (endorsed by several countries) will hone in on your conversation and begin recording.

Orwell's purpose? A warning? He saw it coming. He told us.

Reread Staggerlee's advice. Just another suggestion. First list the instances in which the government curtails citizen's freedom. Then list examples. These can be divided into categories: freedom of speech, to love or relate to other people, privacy, etc. Afterwards, write out your examples in coherent sentences. Have separate paragraphs for each item. In the end, draw a conclusion.

Give me more information. The main point is that Big Brother (the government) is always watching and we need to do something to stop that from happening. He wants to show the dangers of giving the government too much power.
