Ron Atkinson - (did they not have a temp for a couple of weeks?) Other legendary failures between Sir Matt and Sir Alex include Tommy Docherty and several others, but Big Ron (LOL) was the last in a long line of incompetence.

"Big" Ron Atkinson was the previous manager from 1981-1985, winning two FA Cups and was also responsible for signing Bobby Robson from West Brom and Gordon Strachan. He was sacked after what was to be a promising title challenge soon lingered near relegation.

Ron Atkinson but in the early eighties it was Dave Sexton. I believe the former succeeded the latter. However, it may be possible for someone to have intervened but I think not.
