99 plus percent of lawyers went to law school. There are rare exceptions as some people have apprenticed so to speak by working for an attorney without going to law school, but just like the people who went to law school had to pass the bar exam. If you're an attorney you can handle any kind of case, but there may be a state law that you can not advertise yourself as a specialist unless you rec'd additional training and certification

In almost every country and every state -- you need to go to law school to become a lawyer. Period.

Criminal defense as a specialty happens after you are admitted to the bar -- and most states require law school before someone can take the bar exam and become an attorney.

As a practical matter good luck finding an employer who will hire you without a JD even if you managed to pass the bar. That you can be a lawyer without going to law school and only passing the bar is kind of a myth, I think a few states allow it but by and large you need a JD to even take the bar.

First you have to pass the bar (in Wisconsin, if you go to UW Law you automatically pass the bar at graduation). In order to take it, I thought that only VT says you do not need a law degree. I heard that only from sources that were less than reliable.

You need to be a licensed attorney to represent anyone. They ask for the number when you go to court. Otherwise you are practicing without a license and the is a punishable crime. I think the only time although not advised you can do that is for yourself.
