I have always had windows microsoft, but recently my computer has been acting slow, and its really virus-prone. i have decided to get a new home computer (not laptop; i already have one). i am a freshman in college with a few roommates. i left my computer in our living room/dining room (lol typical college life) for my friends to use. however, within one year of owning my brand new store bought computer, my computer has become full of memory, user accounts, pictures, and well....viruses. so i am giving it to my kid brother. now....what should i buy? should i follow the ipod craze and buy an Apple or stick with what i know and love?? also, i HATE vista. and im not sure if they still make XP. thanks, Katie

Well, Katie,

FIRST, you have to set new rules. You should NOT have allowed your friends use your computer. If you insist on allowing them to use your computer, have a technician set permissions so they cannot install anything and have the most limited privileges. Require users to login with a password to use your computer. That's one thing that will protect YOUR information.

Your computer is NOT virus prone. You apparently have not got adequate virus, advertisement, and trojan protection on your computer. And your friends have practiced unsafe internetting which is as dangerous to your computer as unprotected sex is for you.

SECOND, you are getting rid of the computer because you don't want to do the work it takes to get rid of all the viruses and trash your friends have put on your computer. THAT is why your computer is running so slow. It needs a virus checker to clean and remove all viruses. It needs a trojan checker to remove the trojans.

THIRD, you may need to have a computer technician reinstall windows on the current computer so as to get rid of all the GARBAGE your friends have put there that's consuming all your memory and drive space. That will get rid of viruses and trojans and all the bad stuff your friends downloaded that's harming your computer.

You have a good usable computer. It's difficult to get a computer with XP instead of trashy Vista. The bottom line is you simply need to have the current computer cleaned up by a reputable technician, and I'd suggest using one at CompUSA if there's one near you.

If you give it to your brother, that's actually just another irresponsible action. Actually, Ubuntu (an excellent version of Linux) would be protected against viruses.

You should not change to Apple or jump on the ipod craze. You simply need to learn how to take better care of the computer that you already have. Stick with what you know and love. You just need to learn how to be a responsible computer owner.

1) noone else should use your computer ever...
... your friends are the cause of your current comptuer problems.
2) buy and install McAfee Virus checker. Update it regularly.
3) It will cost you a LOT LESS to pay a technician to reinstall your Windows XP and clean the viruses and trojans and all your friends' TRASH off your computer, then it will cost to buy a new computer.
4) If you don't do this, your next computer, using it as you have the current one, will simply end up in 1 year in as bad shape as your current computer.

greater merchandising, a miles better merchandising and marketing team, hassle-free layout, homogeneity. computing gadget is basically any computer no longer a mac, and of course they are going to run the gamut in high quality/value/layout. as a result the only ingredient that Macs rather have over each computing gadget is they might run Apple proprietary utility. there is likewise a picture ingredient that i'm noticing with Macs. because of their branding and merchandising Macs are pointed out as "cooler" than their computing gadget counterpart in specific subcultures. i'm because somewhat some you place down 'virus unfastened' as between the properly suited execs of a mac. That besides the shown fact that has to do with the Unix based working equipment run on the Mac somewhat than the Mac itself. If computing gadget consumers are so vulnerable, they might additionally get a virulent disease unfastened working equipment in between the numerous Linux flavors.

Get an entry level iMac. I just helped hook up 10 in my old high school and they look awesome. They hardly use any desk space and run beautifully. They are wifi ready so you can use fewer cables. They come with iLife 08 which is iTunes, iPhoto, iDvd, iMovie, Photo Booth etc. The only thing you would need to add is a better word processor like iWorks 08 which reads and writes in Powerpoint, Word and Excel formats and is under $80. You won't need any anti virus software. You can set it up to be password protected, it'll keep your friends from using it.

I'd say get a mac. They are a little bit more expensive but totally worth it! I just got one a year ago after having windows my whole life and its not hard to use at all, and totally virus proof. I'm not saying its perfect, like all computers it has its quirks, but it's definately way faster and easier to operate than a PC.

PC with XP, the cheapest thing you can find out there right now. That is unless you actually need the high end pcs with vista or mac.

It isn't that hard to clean your PC. Since it it is portable I would take it to your dealer and ask their computer techs to clean and optimize your computer. If you don't have much room on the drive you could buy a new hard drive and have all of the data transfered to that new hard drive and installed into your portable laptop. It would be cheaper than buying a new computer.
