What is the "black legend"?

I know it's a term from a book by Julián Juderías. But what exactly is the meaning behind it? Could provide me some details, or links of on-line resources to details about it? Thanks in advanced!

it was what Juderias called the attempt by people to describe the Spaniards as inherently cruel, or evil by anti-Spanish factions. for example the way some people described the Spanish Inquisition. the Dutch and the French also had Inquisitions but the Spanish is generally described as being the worst.
