What is the best notebook/laptop out there. I am looking to have a custom laptop that will last me more than 1-2 years. Serious answers only please. If this helps; I will not use it for playing video games just storing and printing some photos, power point and microsoft word. Basically for business use and teaching, thanks.

Since you won't be gaming on it, the graphics card is not that important. Since you need it to last a while, get one that has an extended warrenty. Dell has an available 3year in home warrenty so if something happens to it, they will come out and fix it. The next thing you want to look at is component longevity. The top dog processor right now is the Intel Core 2 chip. Get a notebook with this and it should have enough power to last a while. You will want to have a lot of ram. 4gb is plenty to handle today's operating systems and programs and should be able to handle the future's as well. If you went with 2gb to save money (which would be plenty for now and for a year or 2) when you finally upgraded to 4gb you would need to get rid of your old 2gb pair. Typically they install 2 chips in the 2 available slots so to add more you would have to take the old out. Finally, it doesn't seem like you will be will be storing too many pictures, music or video you want to get the best hard drive for the price. a 160gb drive would probably be good because they are not terribly expensive and they offer a lot of storage for a laptop.

All I can do is give you the same advice I give my own clients.

Get the least expensive laptop you can find with the OS you want to use and use it. There are those for less than $500-600 all over the place. In the next 24 months whatever you get even if you buy the TOP of the line (2000-2500 or so) it will be OLD and out of date period! Just look backwards and you will see that is a true although unpopular opinion! The inexpensive laptops will last technology wise just as long as the high end will!. The fact is that technology is moving very quickly. So whatever you buy will need to be changed, buy less expensive, buy more often, you win because you stay reasonably up to date with less $$ outbound!.

Dell, HP, Compaq, or Toshiba are all good notebooks, find one on sale buy it use it till you need another one. By the time you need another one there will be much better performing hardware and software available for it anyway and you will be able to find it on sale as well. Forget CUSTOM just buy it off the self, save the money, work SMARTER.

Power Point, Word, and photos don't need a whole lot of power to work well a solid Duo-Core with 1 gig of ram and the largest HD you can find will work just great and is available at a very reasonable price just about anywhere.

I use open office and save that money as well, even with the education versions!

Depends on what you mean by 'last longer than 1-2 years'.
If you mean technology wise, that's hard to say. My 3 year old notebook has a faster processor and more ram than the 'modern' models, but it's battery only lasts for about an hour too.

As for actually physically lasting, that all depends on how well you take care of it.

Just get a laptop with 1gb ram and over 80 gb hard drive and you'll be fine. Get an HP or Dell.
