In 5 billion years when the Sun reaches it's red giant stage.
I only wish that the idiots who spoke of the Mayan calendar would actually do some research on the subject.
The Mayans NEVER spoke of the end of the world in 2012 and it is NOT inferred by the end of the 13 baktun cycle of the calendar. It is only regarded as a transition into the next cycle. What many assume to be website fact is only fiction conjured up by persons in the last 5 years hoping to make some cash from those who are so misinformed and lazy that they will believe anything they read.
www.2012 ? Is that supposed to be a science website? Tell me who writes it? Tell me their credentials. People are so unbelievably gullable when it comes to things they know little about. Try opening the pages of a book sometime instead of surfing pseudowebsites. Sit down and read a book by John Major Jenkins about the calendar.
The Mayans created long measuring systems. One of these is called a baktun. 2012 represents the end of 13 baktuns which is the end of one CYCLE but the baktuns continue through 19. In fact, 19.19.19.17.19 equals October 12, 4772. The next day will be first use of the "Pictuns" position and will be written as: 1.0.0.0.0.0.
Armegeddonists and psychics wouldn't get much attention if they started proclaiming October 12, 4772 as the end of the world, so they picked 2012 hoping to make some good cash in the next 5 years.
So far we have an alien invasion, a killer asteroid, the return of Nibiru, pole reversals, the return of Jesus, armegeddon, who knows what they will think of next. Whatever they think people will believe.
I am far too often amazed and saddened at the lack of education by persons who come onto yahooanswers promoting some idiotic thing that they read on the internet and accept that it is therefore true without checking the source or validity of it.
The world may not end but it would seem that, intellectually, dark days lie ahead.
One can only wonder what the next false prophesy will be after 2012 comes and goes.

This question can be considered as either Philosophic or Astrophysic. I assume you are referring to the fate of the planet as opposed to the fate of the biologic organisms that inhabit the surface.
Our personal star (Sol) is a dG2 stellar body on the Hertzsprung-Russell graph. It is a very average star with a lw mass. Our sun is roughly 5,000,000,000 years old (as analyzed through spectrographic reseach) and is about halfway through its main-sequence life.
After this time, most of the hydrogen in the stellar core will be exhausted and the Sun will start to collapse because of its gravitational field. As the Sun collapses, the core temperatures will rise dramatically, which will initiate Helium fusion.
Hydrogen fusion in the Sun is called the proton-proton process. The residue is Helium. The proper term for this process is Nucleosynthesis. I shall not go into the reactions (they are easily searched on the Internet).
At this time, after the new energy influx of gravitational collapse and the new Helium fuel source, the Sun will balloon into the red giant stage.
The Earth will melt to a cinder if not completely vaporized. This is when the Earth ends.

In 4 or 5 billion years... when our Sun dies.
Of course, a number of natural catastrophes could occur between now and then that may wipe out life on earth. But, the world will definitely "end" when the Sun dies.

According to some it's when the "7 Horsemen" of the Apocalypse ride, that would be following the last chapter of the Bible. Some believe that the end will occur when both the long & short Myan Calenders end. that date was spelled out to us about three thousand years before Christ was born, this date will be December 21, 2012. for more info on either of the endings you can read the Bible or got to www.2012.org. And lastley if all hold true and science wins out well then we have about 4 million years untill SOL (our Sun) burns itself out, thus freezing this solar system.

If you mean earth:
Well you can't really predict this sort of thing. What we do know is this:
in 5 billion years or so the sun will die (run out of hydrogen). it will then suddenly expand and POOF thats us finished.
Yellowstone supervolcano is due. No-one knows whether humanity will survive this eruption
in a few thousand years the magnetic field of earth is due to switch round. This may have drastic effects but again no-one really knows what.
we could get hit by an asteroid or meteor anytime, too. if its big enough it can wipe out humanity.
And if you mean the universe:
if theres enough matter in the universe, it should basically stop expanding and start collapsing under its own gravity. CRUNCH.
if there isnt enough matter then it just keeps going pretty much. slows down to a stop...

No one knows when the world is going to end. Science offers nothing to the conversation and religion does much to prepare us for the ending but it only gives us clues to the actuall ending. Christ tells us that He will return "like a theif in the night," and " no one knows when He will return and destroy the earth with fire. It seems that civilization has been destroyed before. Thousands of years ago, the earth was almost completely destroyed. This event destroyed the dinosours. No one knows the time or day, but rest assure, it's coming.

Could be tomorrow, could be next week, could be 20 years.
It will for certain end in about 4 billion years when the sun expands to a red giant.
Before that, no one knows for sure.

might sound like a smart alec answer, but, it will end on the last day. No one knows, nor can an intelligent guess be made, the best thing is to just not worry about it.

in 5-6 billion years, the sun will swell into a red giant and possibly engulf the orbit of Mercury. The oceans will boil away and life as we know it will be impossible. after the sun passes its red giant phase the earth will cool off, but will, in all probability, be a lifeless chunk of rock. Of course we could destroy it before then with nukes or a sufficiently large asteroid could strike the Earth.
