You need to check to see what zone you are in to decide when to plant. You can plant root crops earlier (the best times will be on the package). You need to keep in mind what types of vegetables you like, but carrots, radishes, and turnips are easy root crops. Tomatoes are always good, and there are many different varieties, from Big Boys and Early Girls to grape tomatoes and Romas (those are the ones I'd recommend). If you like peppers, they should be planted about the same time as the tomatoes (We're in Zone 5, so we plant in early to mid-May). You should water the tomatoes and peppers when it's dry out--we had a terrible crop this ear, because we planted late and didn't water very well.
You will need to be a little cautious when figuring out how many plants you want to put out, though. Zucchini is very easy to grow, but make sure you have lots of friends who like them if you plant a lot. Also, don't let them get too big, unless you're making zucchini bread--about 8-10 inches is more than enough (when they're this size, they're great sliced thin and sauteed, even if you just use Pam butter flavored spray).
As for flowers, the easiest to grow are zinnias, marigolds and sunflowers. Sunflowers are especially good if you're a bird lover--they go nuts over the seeds.

The answer is simple. Plant what you like. Visit a local garden center and get their advice. See what others in your area are growing. Pay attention to your gardening zone when choosing what to plant. This is why advice from your local garden center is so valuable.
If you are starting a new garden, this would be a great time to till the area and incorporate as much organic material as you can. If you can add some cow or horse manure now it will decompose over the winter and your soil will be all the better for it in the spring. This is known as sheet composting or composting in place.

There are some questions you need to ask yourself before you choose flowers or plants.
1) what is my growing zone?
2) how many hours of sun will shine where I want to plant?
3) what KIND of sun ( East, West) will shine where I want to plant?
4) how much work will I be willing to do?
5) what kind of soil is where I want to plant?
6) is the soil loam?, clay?, sand? leaf litter?
After you get those questions answered, then come back and we'll give it a try.
