There are so many films I love, for so many different reasons. But I have 2 favourite films, they are not Oscar winning, but there is something about them. The first is 'Highlander' - about a man who is immortal and fights other immortals, by chopping off their heads until he wins the prize - which is to become mortal. I loved it so much I called my son Conor.
The second film - is 'Meet Joe Black' - Brad Pitt is 'death' who takes over a human body in order to see what life is all about, I just find it a very touching film - and for personal reasons always end up crying.

As a much despised American, replete with the teremity to "troll" on Y!A UK, I can't resist revealing-because I'm so much older than you (53)-that my favorite film(s) are anything by Federico Fellini. They are "life altering" experiences. My favorite is "Juliette of the Spirits" ("Guilietta degli Spiriti") about the ignored wife of a famous film director who enters a world of fantasy as she deals with her husband's infidelity. Clearly, "Il maistro" was on acid when he made it. Check out "La Dolce Vita" because it is a masterpiece and the scenes with Anita Ekberg shouldn't be missed (now THAT'S an actress with some presence).
Anything by Fellini, Bergman, Truffaut-those are REAL movies of depth. In a couple of minutes, I'm going to watch Truffaut's "Fahrenheit 451" that I managed to video record years ago. Today's films just don't come close to the breathtaking work of the previous years. Bernard Herriman's music alone makes this surreal film with the sublime Julie Christie worth watching again and again.
"Girl, Interrupted" netted Ms. Jolie an oscar. Nobody's much heard of the film since, altough there's been WAY TOO MUCH of La Jolie and way too little of Winona Ryder, who of course, ruined her career by revealing herself to be an inveterate thief and drug user.
Truthfully, I haven't seen the film. This is because I'm so tired of spending $10 for a ticket here in the states, sitting in a theater full of mannerless people with their cell phones going off, buckets of reeking and dripping popcorn, their feet on top of the seat in front of them, all for a slick movie that looked good in previews, but quickly revealed itself to be pumped full of air, if not downright awful. That's the norm, nowadays, I suppose.
Hey, here's one for you: John Frankenheimer's 1962 classic "The Manchurian Candidate." I don't know what your opinion of the inimitable Angela Lansbury is, but have a look at this if you think she's anything less than a spot-on actress. The film is scary and filled with innovative film making.
See what you've gone and done? You've got me started again....
