I do believe that Brett Favre is a pretty good quarterback and is very talented. However, I also agree that there seems to be a double-standard for certain well liked professional atheletes like
Favre and others who have experienced problems.
I am neither a Charger fan or a Packers fan but I have common sense. If Brett Favre were any other quarterback, the controversy probably would have followed him around a lot longer than it has. I also don't see how his painkiller abuse can just be easily dismissed by his supporters as a youthful mistake that he overcame by confessing and rehabilitation.
I think that if we are going to hold Barry Bonds to one standard, we need to be willing to hold Lance Armstrong, Floyd Landis, Mark Maguire, Jose Conseco, and anyone else accused of steroid/substance abuse to the same standards.
We can't isolate professional athletes based upon their public appeal and skin color. If they get caught with their hand in the cookie jar, we need to hold their feet to the fire and if they are only suspected of doing wrong like Barry Bonds and Pete Rose, then we need to let it go until they either test positive or are proven guilty in a court of law.
Don't get me wrong, Brett Favre is good but I think that both Dan Marino and John Elway were better quarterbacks overall. The only advantage that Brett Favre had over both of them is time and youth.
He has been playing for 17 seasons now, so it only stands to reason that he was going to break most of the quarterback records sooner or later, based on the total amount of time and games that he has played in the NFL.
Although, if you were to compare John Elway, Dan Marino, and Brett Favre in the same amount of time and years that both Marino and Elway were active...Elway and Marino had the better records and performances, so overall Favre is not that impressive.
Look, I'm not disgruntled about Favre but I certainly don't think that he's reached god status like John Madden likes to elevate Favre to be. I just wish that people would be realistic about him and realize that he's not as consistent as he used to be and his abilities have declined considerably as he gets older, which should be expected.

Maybe he should - for the fact that he was able to put up stellar performances while in a Vicodin induced haze. I had that stuff after some minor surgery and it doesn't kill the pain, it just make the couch REAL comfortable.
