oh wow, that's a close one. I would say being poor. If the poor were rich then they'd hang out with them in the country clubs and such. But if a rich person suddenly became poor, they wouldn't know what to do! Who would bathe Fluffy the spoiled dog? Who would cook all their fancy meals? And Oh My God, who would do their hair and makeup? So many questions.

Wealth brings around different problems. Poor people have true friends who will help whenever they can, no matter what the financial situation. Rich people, if they ever cease to be rich, very quickly find that they never really had any friends at all. There's no advantage to being rich or poor, either absolutely or relatively, there are just different problems. While poor people can depend upon their friends to help whenever they need help, rich people don't have that luxury. It's not being poor that they fear, it's the loneliness that comes when all their 'friends' turn their backs on them that they fear. Possibly having to then interact with people who haven't spent their entire lives pursuing money, and discovering how infinitely better life is without the stuff: when live revolves around learning and developing and understanding rather than just looking at the financial pages and making phone calls, and seeing who they can make dislike them today by ripping them off. There's security in wealth; they can go where they want, do what they want, when they want. That, however, is all that they have. They have no true friends. That is what they are afraid of finding out. Poor people like each other for who they are. Rich people like each other for what they have, then, if they ever lose what they have, they are truly left with nothing.

We cannot all be rich, inflation would very quickly recreate poverty.

Reading these answers I am astonished at the assumption that the rich are greedy and self centred.

Most truly wealthy people spread their good fortune amongst others.

They would not be afraid of being poor, many of them have been. Also look at the number of successful people who go bankrupt and lose everything, yet within months are back on top.

Wealth is a state of mind. The wealthy are wealthy whether they have any money or not.

As to them fearing the poor being rich, there are numerous schemes where the sole aim is to help poor people attain success. A perfect example is Cornell University, a university supported by wealthy individuals, dedicated to helping any who want to help them selves.

Poor is a relative term, as is rich. To be rich, there must be a person or persons less well off than you. One does not fear having less if one does not want more. Similarly, one does not translate envy into fear.

I suspect that fear is an emotion which exists in the minds of those who are controlled by fear. Quite often those people are poor.

The rich fear being poor. Poor people understand that when you're broke there is hope of winning the lottery.

A lottery winner buying the house next door, or the poor being rich as you state.

It depends on the person himself... the answer could vary if
-The person is really rich (so rich his worries are not money)
-The person had a poor background and his nightmare is being poor
-The person is a leader who profits from cheap labour of the poor
-etc...

I believe some of them would fear equality, money becomes a status symbol and, just as if we all drove Mercedes Benz or all rode bicycles neither would be a status symbol - just tools. OMG does that then mean what they fear most is communism?! you really shouldn't ask questions which make my grey matter start stirring lol.
