I am scared about having to have my legs open, I have never had to undress at the doctors before.

Does it hurt when then push the speculum into you?

How do you get into the stirrups, will the nurse put me in them?

it doesnt hurt at all just tell them you are nerveous & to be gentle...i prefer a female gyno. because they seem to 'understand' our sensitivity in that area stirrups--you sit on the bed & skoot forward, really not bad , they'll show/direct you i went a few wk ago for my annual and i was in the stirrups for about a minute. if you can relax & trust the dr everything will be smoother...he/she does this sort of thing everyday & should be experienced

Pap Smears are really no big deal. They give you a paper dress that opens from the front and a pig paper like blanket to cover your bottom half with. They will leave the room when you get undressed. The stirrups you just rest your heel in. They don't strap you down or anything like that. If you need help, the doctor or nurse can help you place your feet in them. Spectrum's come in a couple of different sizes because our bodies are not all the same and some woman are naturally tighter than others. They lube up a spectrum and stick it in you and the open it up slightly. It feels like a little period cramping with a pinch. It's not too bad. Woman doctors tend to be a little more gentle and compassionate then men doctors, since they know how it feels. Also, since no one else mentioned it, while you are there I would ask for the doctor to teach you how to do a self breast exam.

First time is always scary. The nurse will have you lay down and direct your feet into the stirrups, if you have trouble doing it yourself. The nurse will leave you alone when it's time to undress, after taking your blood pressure and weight. It feels very uncomfortable the first time, but not real painful. Take some deep breaths and relax all your muscles and this will help a great deal during the process. We've all gone through this, so try not te be scared. Tell the doctor you're very nervous and he/she will probably walk you through it slowly.

It's not that bad I promise!! I was a WRECK before my first visit and it was no big deal. You undress in the room privately before the Dr. comes in. They give you a paper gown to wear so your not just laying there naked. The nurse/Dr. will help you get your legs in the stirups so don't worry. When it goes in it doesn't hurt but when they do the actual pap smear you may cramp up just a little but not to bad. It's over in like 5 minutes. no big deal I promise! After you have your first exam it'll be a piece of cake the 2nd time. I've been quite a few times and had a baby so I'm not very shy down there anymore, lol! Good luck!!

Relax it doesn't even hurt feels more like a bit of pressure and a small cramping pain for just a few seconds.
The stirrups are easy to get into but if you need help the nurse will set your heels into them.
The doctor has seen plenty of stuff in his/her time and it is over in about 10 minutes.

All of the answers here are great, but let me add something - I'd rather go to the gynecologist for a pap smear than go to the dentist! I hope that makes you feel better. My doc is great - she always lets me know exactly what's going on, she's gentle, and she uses lubrication. There's nothing to worry about, and you'll be glad you get one of these every year, as they are great for your health.
