No website seems to think it's politically correct to list these, but what are the characteristics of people from different European countries?

For example, Italians have dark hair and dark skin, but are there other less obvious characteristics? What about the other ethnicities? Scotish/Irish/English/Welch. French, Dutch, Slavic, Russian, Austrian, Greek? What are the easiest ways to differenciate between ethnic backgrounds.

I'm not trying to stereotype, but in historic reinactments they always use people that look like they're from the target country. We watched a video on the French Revolution and everyone in it looked French (well, except for Marie Antionette, she was Austrian), but they picked people that fit in so well. I could only broadly tell why they looked French to me, but they did. In cinematography, how do they use the stereotypes to reinforce the setting of the film?

I only used the Italian thing as an example. I actually know a guy that's Italian, but I couldn't even tell until I heard him mention it.

I guess what I'm asking is: "Is there any specific characteristics that are so unique to the general populace of ethnicities that they are used to represent them?"

For example, in my Spanish book there's a page with pictures of people from all the major Spanish speaking countries and there were differences between them. Not big differences, but something that people from those countries would have noticed.

Characterisitics Or Stereotypes? Not All Italians Have Dark Skin And Hair, An Example Of This Would Be Hayden Panettiere(She Is Fully Italian). Its Hard To Differenciate Between 'Ethnic Backgrounds' Without Stereotyping.....Depends On The Individual I Guess....

Try going to Europe... people are much more diverse than you'd think. There are a lot of immigrants in western European countries, not all Italians have dark hair/eyes and not all Swedes have blonde hair/blue eyes. Of course you can make very general distinctions, but those generalizations don't go too far. Also look at the descendants of European immigrants in America. Are they in any way distinguishable based on their characteristics? Even if they no longer have the same culture/language that their ancestors had. You can make very general distinctions, but that's about it.

You are way off-base. In most cases, you cannot tell a persons ethnicity by looking at them.

Italians don't ALL have dark hair or dark skin...those from the north can look almost Nordic or Teutonic.

Even anthropologists can't tell by looking what someones ethnic background is.

Europe, Asia, North and South America have been over run with warring nations hundreds and hundreds of times since human history began. Inter-mixing of the races has been going on since then also.

You simply can't base your opinion on the way someone looks.

The only way you can tell is if that person tells you what his ethnic background is.

not all italians have dark hair, eyes and skin. the inhabitants in the northern part of italy tend to have blue eyes and blond hair and light skin. some irish are blue eyed and have fair freckled skin, and have blond or red hair but others have darkhair, skin, and eyes. most teutonic (northern European) peoples have blond hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. in short though there is usually a portion of a countrys populace which can be said to be idiomatic of that country, not everyone is in that classification. sorry to burst your bubble.
