does anyone know how much it costs, to get a cheque cashed early at the royal bank of scotland. i know there are other outlets, that do cheque cashing, but prefer not to use them

Typically £25 .. I suggest you photo-copy the cheque for your records first & then take it into a Branch, speak to some-one behind the counter .. get a Receipt for BOTH the cheque and the processing charge.

NB> If the cheque is drawn on a foreign bank it may take anything up to 3 months to before you are totally safe from it being 'bounced' ..

There is a well known 419 Advanced Fee cheque cashing scam where the scammer (or his mate) works at the foreign bank. The Cheque 'clears' OK in UK but months later, when the physical cheque arrives back at the foreign bank, they claim it's a fake . and so the payment is reversed ... of course by then you have already 'sent on' most of the funds to the scammers mates via Western Union or similar (which is not reversable) so you end up with a massive overdraft ...
