The topography of Greece is broken up into mountains. This caused Greek city-states to be formed. Each city was a political unit. Our words "political' and politician" come from the Greek word for city, "polis". This made wars more likely. Because of Greece's coastline and its hundreds of islands, a tradition of seafaring developed. Because of this and the fact that Greece was always a poor country that couldn't support a large population, Greeks were encouraged to emigrate and form colonies throughout the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
