I love how someone answered you by saying "because one is alive and the other isn't." I wonder how a newborn suddenly becomes alive if it wasn't alive the last nine months. And how do two living beings come together and create a non-living being? And, since when do non-living things have unique DNA and heartbeats, and move around and suck their thumbs? Weird.
Anyway, the answer to your question is because we, as a society, are very inconsistent. Many of our laws do not make any sense when looked at side by side with other laws. Our legal system is run by human beings, who are flawed and sometimes get confused between the difference between what would be most convenient and pleasing to people, and what would actually be just.

If someone is 2 weeks pregnant and got raped by their father & had an abortion, I say that is OK. When someone is 6 months pregnant & kills the baby because they're a dumb *** I say the baby is probably better off not having that a**hole as a parent, but it is very wrong. I don't think abortions after a certain gestational age should be legal. But I also think there a certain circumstances when it is the better choice to have the abortion. I had one when I was about 3 weeks pregnant a long time ago & I don't regret the decision, I do feel bad for it however and could never do it again.

ok for all you people that are saying abortions are only done in the first 12 weeks so its only a fetus WRONG!.....why do you think they are trying to push bans on partial birth abortions? some states allow abortions up until 26 weeks.......a premature baby born as early as 24 weeks can survive (very rarely but it is possible) if you are past 20 weeks and have an abortion they actually induce labor and you deliver a live baby and they let it die......do your research before you go ranting. also miss savanna....you said it is a fetus until it develops a brain, sorry to inform you but the babys brainstem starts forming approximately 48 hours after fertilization so by your standards the morning after pill is ok but no other means of abortion. i dont think the question was why is it OK.....but rather why is it that we are so morally bankrupt as a society that we make it legal to do so. i do think there are circumstances where an abortion is ok....but very few and as early as possible during the pregnancy. when my son was born and was in the NICU there was a baby there born to an 11 year old mother who was molested by an uncle, the baby was born at 27 weeks and had not only the preemie issues but severe mental retardation from being inbred and the mother almost died during the delivery i sat there everyday wondering to myself why on earth someone hadnt taken that girl for an abortion (which i am normally opposed to) there was also a baby in that same NICU that was an abortion gone bad, a 25 week "fetus" who was over the weight limit and the doctors were forced to medically intervene and save, all so that the baby could grow up knowing not only did his biological mother not want him, but she tried to kill him. i get very aggravated about this topic too

Both are crimes against humanity and if you go so far- god. But we must legally forbid killing of human life and babies since if that was not outlawed then it would be the breakdown of all society if we could kill people without penalty.
While I am pro-life for my personal believes and believe that life starts at conception, I also believe that is a value judgement. I live in America and values and beliefs in my opinon should not be provided or legislated. So even through I do think that it is murder- it's effects on society is not the same as murder.
But furthermore, it sounds like you have a lot of soul searching to do, or you just like to get people upset by starting such a topic!

Oh boy. You open a big can of worms with this question.
I dont think they do abortions on babies that are past the first trimester of pregnancy (3-4 months max). So, gestational age is generally a huge difference between aborted babies and newborns, even severely premature newborns.
I wont go into abortions much on my part. I'm not a fan of them, but in cases of, say, rape, or where the child would be gestating and living in a hostile environment (drug abuse, physical abuse - in utero is even more damaging then when they come out), then so be it, that's the way things are. Killing a child, is killing a child. But boy oh boy. I haven't read the answers yet but i'll bet there's a lot of heat on this board...

In our society, a women's unborn fetus is a part of her and can not truly be considered "alive" yet by technical standards in the first trimester, when abortion is a legal option to ending a pregnancy and potential life. Women have the right to choose what to do with their bodies in this manner, and at this time the act of abortion is obviously legal. A newborn is an entirely different matter, as the act of killing one would constitute murder, and the interests of which are protected by the state. These are laws that us fallible humans have created, and it does not make it "O.K.", as you state, to "kill" an unborn child. It's just legal. If you don't agree with abortion then become politically active and voice your opinion! That is one of the beautiful things about being American. Your voice can be heard.

It is certainly NOT OK to kill either. An unborn child is LIVING. It moves, it's heart beats, it takes in nutrition, it eliminates waste from it's body, it kicks, it turns over, pictures have shown the baby sucking it's thumb. This is a LIVING being, it simply needs to complete it's development while connected to it's mother. Abortion is an abomination. Life is God's creation - how do we have a 'right' to take it away?

Either way is bad the difference is once the child is born into the world that is killing someone. For women to have an abortion the baby is not fully developed so your killing something that isn't alive. That's why you have up to 12 weeks to aboard the baby after the 12 weeks it's developing into a baby

No one is going to like this answer, but actually infanticide has been practiced all over the world since the dawn of man (as has abortion). It's only been recently that killing a baby has been made illegal.
Everyone has their own opinion of what's "okay." Anbd, what's legal is also different.
I'm not saying I would ever kill a baby, that's not the kind of society I was raised in, but it's all true.

I guess because in some people's minds a baby is not considered a person until the baby is born. Neither is right though, unless there is something wrong with the unborn child.
