There is no "role" for sadness because being sad is someone's emotion concerning an event. In everyone's life a little rain must fall. Life would be really boring if we only experienced one emotion. Life is composed of up and downs. It just so happens we learn more from the downs and we can learn to appreciate life more. We also develop compassion for those not as blessed than us.
