I'm from Bangladesh traveled more than 10 countries for various reasons and lengths. I agree that Bangladesh is one of the least developed and most natural calamity prone countries of the world. But trust me, the people are generally docile (submissive, easily managed) and are content with whatever little they have.
However, I would suggest that you be armed with all the information required for your pleasant stay here. Like availability of pure drinking water, this is not at all a matter if your friend is from middle-class or even lower-middle-class category.
The mosquito menace is seasonal and at this point of time we can see that these creatures are starting to come inside our houses. Sometimes they are such nuisance that you need to be living in a mosquito proof house with netted extra window and door panes to keep the mosquitoes outside. Use of various kind of repellant is now part of our habit during the season.
Now coming to personal security, all I would say that if you have lived in India, Pakistan or Sri Lanka then you would find Bangladesh at par, if not better than those countries where suicide bombers and snipers are routine on the news.
You would be lucky to come here during the present non-party neutral caretaker government's rule till end-December 2008 when the law and order situation is one of the best our country has experienced since its inception in 1971.
Now, you tell me whether you are thinking of Somalia, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq or such places where one can possibly use the question like "is it DANGEROUS to go to **********?"
Btw, huge mansions are backdated in the present lifestyle for the riches since it is synonymous of the palaces of the Zaminders (Landlords) from the British era. Hence, if she specifically says that she lives in say Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, Dhanmondi and such posh areas then you might be living in lonely mansions.
In any case, you are most welcome in Bangladesh and it would surely change your present perception to some extent.

I don`t know you from which country. But Bangladesh is much more safer than specially U.S.A. Also 100% better & safer than Pakistan - India as well. Nothing to be worry- people are very friendly, honest, helpful for guests.. But if you are from different world than better not to come, because BD people will not welcome you there. May will put in to ZOO. Thanks
