Well, they maybe right....Sort of. The canyon is about 1 mile deep. That is 1.6 km (most people round it to 2 because they can't remember the 1.6) And you are also right, it is much bigger as stated above.

I visited the Grand Canyon one time. I think I was 15 or 16 at the time. I knew that it's big and it's full of tall "mountains," but I was quite shocked when I saw it before my eyes. My biggest surprise was that it wasn't big at all. It was VERY DEEP, NOT BIG.
