What percentage of the human population, based on the activities of our species, indicate that they would prefer to be dead?

It seems true that people who engage in self destructive behavior have a death wish,
but having been there and done that I can say with certainty that I never was aware of that desire.it was perhaps an unconscious thing.as a alcoholic and addict I wished only to escape the sharpness of reality. and so I self medicated,
to the point of being in danger of dying. then finaly I had a moment of clarity and had to face the fact that to continue as I had would result in death and I had a strange indifference to that fact.thats what woke me up I chose life .and I have to remake that choice everyday.its not easy to overcome that type of behavior.Whats really funny is that after giving up the
things that were killing me I spent the next 3-4 years consciously wishing I were dead! LOL
then I started to learn to live with reality, which still sucks but now I have the tools to deal with it.I look forward to everyday.
Pray constantly for those people who act like they want to be dead.most of us get our wish.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary condition.
As usual there are exceptions to any absolute statement.
People who are near death anyway and who are accurately assured by more than one doctor of a very painful future is one condition I would identify where choosing to end ones life is a good solution.
I am unable to identify for you exactly how many people commit suicide. Statistics are hard to come by. See the links below for some US statistics. It must be a large number of people as we have a word that is in common usage for such an action.
There are also religious prohibitions. We don't prohibit actions that people are not doing anyway.

stop it. donot be so cocky sure. you cannot sit in front of yopur computer and philosophise about people wanting to be dead. go and ask them, and see how many people want to die.
