When I power on my computer I get this: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corruupt:
\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file. WTF is this? I have tried using the system restore dvd but to no avail. When I can actually get it to boot to the restore I get a message that says ( not worded exactly) we could not continue restoration because the size of the hard drive could not be acquired. WTF is that about? Please help! This kinda has sentimental value to me. Is my restore disc ruined? Is my hard drive fried? Please any suggestions would help. I am not very computer savy and I am a broke *** college student, so I can not really afford to have a shop fix it. Help!!!!!!!!!!!

Try a restore to factory settings without using the discs, by using one of these two methods. Toshiba restore. Method 1 Shut down the computer. Turn the PC back on and hit the F8 key repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Option Screen appears. Click "Repair Your Computer"and then press ENTER choose your country and click OK On the "System Recovery Options Screen" click "Restore Application" which is the last option. Follow the on-screen instructions When prompted, click on "Full Factory Recovery" "Next" Click "Yes" You will notice for a while it seems like nothing is happening, give it some time. After some minutes, recovery will complete and you click "Finish" Method 2. 1) Hold down the power button for 10 (ten) seconds to switch off your machine. 2) Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook. 3) When the machine Starts beeping; release the 0 key. 4) When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery. 5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next. 6) Select Recover to out-of-box state. Click Next again. 7) Click Next to Start recovery.

It's possible you got a virus or something somehow got corrupted on the drive. If the restore option couldn't determine your drive size, then something is definitely wrong. As to how to fix it without taking it in, you'll have to find a really good friend who's really good with computers and have him/her fix it for you for free, if they can.

the "Hal" file in windows contains your hardware info for windows. Boot from your Windows CD and select "Recovery" option. You need to "extract/expand" the "hal" file to C:/windows/system32 directory. You can Google this process under windows recovery process. Below is the Microsoft fixes.
