Has anyone ever done anything like this before? where could i go to meet new people? thanks

Give it a few weeks, (do the things you would at home like going out in the weekends, or shopping, to the movies or sports,) and if you have not found people you feel comfortable with, join a sports team or volunteer for something like scouting.
Even if you just go for a trial (team sport) or a special event or special day (scouting) you are more likely to meet new people.
If you feel comfy there you can continue going.
You could also talk with your co-workers, as often they will have relatives in your age who would love to take you out for the day or night. (Better pay for yourself though.)
