Hi, I'm 17 and was adopted when I was a baby. And I don't know what my ethnic background is. I know my biological mother is white British, as I have a picture of her. She has light hazel eyes, light/medium brown hair, and very fair skin with freckles. And I have dark brown eyes, black eyebrows, very dark brown hair, and olive/tanned skin. I know nothing about my biologial father, for legal reasons, and I'd just like to know what his background is, as it's quite obvious i'm not full British. I know have a clue what I am. A couple a weeks ago a girl asked me if I was part Japanese as I have kind of oriental shape eyes. A few days ago someone from the Middle East asked if I was from England, and said I looked like the women fom Egypt and not English at all. But most people guess that I'm Spanish. It just upsets me a little that i'm not able answer them something as simple as that. I feel mixed up. Is there anything I can do to look up information about my dad?

Sorry, I forgot to add. I don't have my birth certificate. My adopted mum says my biological mum kept it.

You will eventually need a copy of your birth certificate in order to travel and do things, so go get a copy of it. You can order it. It should list on their a generalization of what your father is (you know where they check a box). Hopefully that will help. If not, when you're 18, you can hire a detective to find out from your bio-mom of find your bio-dad (which would be really expensive). I would just decide on a mixture and tell people that. I have a friend who doesn't know what she is either. She just says American Indian.

I think there's a site on the web, where it takes a picture of you, and it tells you what features you have and it matches it to a race. I forgot what the name of it was, so you could always google that. But if you want to know 100% what your racial makeup is, you'd have to get a genetical analysis test, and those are expensive. You need to secure a copy of your birth certificate, because if you ever want to travel, leave the country, or do anything requiring a passport and a proof of citizenship, you need the bc.

Perhaps a DNA test could give you an accurate answer. Unless a father is listed on your birth certificate you will have to go seek out your birth mother and ask her.
