the first episode is a flashback of later on when naruto and sakura and sai finds sasuke. Keep watching and everything will make sense. :)

The beginning of the first episode is previewing what's going to happen in the later episodes. And then it shows Naruto, Sakura, and the rest of the characters after the 2 1/2 year time skip..
