Actually, it is law which was part of a 2005 supplemental military appropriations bill. I believe it is nicknamed the REAL ID Act & it is supposed to go into effect sometime in 2008. Google "REAL ID ACT" for more details. A majority of the states have gone on record opposing it.

The eventual aim is an implantable chip, much like those available for pets. Evidence is accumulating that those chips are responsible for greater cancer risks.

The plot thickens...

EDIT:
coragrift: You just gave a description of a Federal ID Card - "It is a set of standards which determine which state issued ID cards will be accepted by the Federal Government for Federal purposes." One of those purposes is you must have such a State ID (or a valid Federal Passport) in order to fly on as commercial airliner. As I stated earlier, A majority of states have officially opted out of the program, meaning a resident of one of these states will not be allowed to fly w/o a passport.

Unless other states step up they are going to have a hard time refusing to follow through with the new id's. State can't over rule federal law. I think it's ridiculous that the federal govt. could care less what the people think on so many things. In WV they are reporting that the fee for drivers licenses could go up to $100 (in wv only) Because the state does not have enough money to update to the system requirements needed for the new id's.

Well, the social security care is really a national ID card, but the problem is that it is easy to forge, and the SSA does nothing when hundreds of people have the same number. Kooks on the right and left call the Real ID act, the making of a national ID card, but they are incorrect. It is a necessary act that will protect us from illegal alien invaders and Islamic terrorists.

Not that I have seen -- other than your passport.

The Real ID Act is not a national ID card -- despite what many people seem to think. It is a set of standards which determine what STATE issued ID cards will be accepted by the federal govt for federal purposes.

If the Senate is considering such a bill, it's got to be fairly recent.

Yeah it's called the Real ID act, but a lot of people and politicians are against it and will probably be repealed before it's implemented. Personally I think it's just another scheme to take our freedoms away. Just wait til they start asking for ID every time you cross state borders on a Greyhound!

We now have the "national identification number," formerly know as the "social security number."

We do not have to harken back to the days of Hitler and the 3rd Reich. We merely have to look at the USSR and South Africa - they had ID's that you had to carry, and we railed against them for the practice. And yet - what are some politicians advocating? The same thing!

I just pray that we can survive until 2008 without this administration attempting to usurp the Constitution. And I pray that the good people of this country will survive and stop being sheep to this administration.

We do not have to give up our liberties for security. Remember what Franklin said (I won't bother printing it here, if you are interested, go look it up) about giving up freedom (or liberties) for security.

And well remember the words of Alexander H. Stephens (Confederate Vice President): "Liberty once lost will never be recovered without blood."

No they have not. There are ideas, good and bad being brought up on way to prevent another 9-11. Instead of bitching about this one and others open your mouths and let your idea out! It may work, but unless you have something to say stop calling people stupid and making dumb remarks about martial law.

not yet. but it doesn't matter.

what can we really do to stop Bush? in some sad twisted way i can't wait for about a year or so from now. Just to see what Bush pulls to implement marshal law and stay inpower prior to a 2008 election.

It is very frightening.

what can we do? nothing. We are helpless. No one will stop bush from acting out this world plan.

If they would verify everyone's legal status, then yes, I would go for it, but it shouldn't be like Nazi Germany that you go to jail if you forget to put it in you wallet running down the street...
