If you're looking to buy one, you really can't go wrong. I mean, they're very common so the price should be relatively low. One of the few things that I would advise you to look at is the engine, if it's the base model with the 3.4L V6 (3400) you're going to want to make sure that the Lower Intake Manifold Gasket is good, because there was a problem with it leaking prematurely. I say, just go for the LS model with the 3.8L V6 (3800), which is a much more reliable engine. Another issue to look at is the brakes, especially the rotors. The front rotors are prone to warping, however a quick upgrade to aftermarket rotors will alleviate that problem. I have owned two 00+ Impalas, the first was a 2002 base sedan and the second is a 2000 LS. Both have over 100,000 miles on them and haven't missed a beat. They should easily hit 200k before they are done. The 2002 needed a lower intake manifold gasket, but I had it fixed by a friend so it cost me next to nothing.

Here are the good things about the Impalas
1. Lots of room
2. HUGE trunk
3. Comfortable seats (The LS buckets more so than the bench in the base)
4. Great sound system for a factory system
5. Good gas mileage (28-32 MPG Highway, 20-22 city)
6. Nice smooth, quiet ride
7. The 3800 has a lot of room for modding

Basically the 00+ Impala is one of GMs best products (in terms of reliability) in the last 20 or so years.

I Believed that CHEVY Screwed UP IMPALAS Image and
name. I don't care what anyone else says even about modern technologies. IMPALA WAS A PERFORMANCE Sedan /Coupe in the 60s and never should have been a front wheel drive V6 today.
The body style is to conservative, this is Impala if you want conservative buy a Caprice but Chevy kept the Impala and screwed up the looks and performance.

Impala should have been the third hottest muscle car offered by GM for the 2000+yrs you know. Especially with the end of F-body production in 2002. For 2003 GM should have offered the return of the rear wheel drive sedans and coupes with optional muscle performance packages not these supercharged V6s front drives and decals. I'm thinking more like the following,,,

1. VETTE Z06
2. Camaro SS ram air *last yr 2002*
3. Impala / **SS for extra performance low stance and that LS6 motor that's in the GTO with the same tranny options 6 speed**(6 speed offered in the Impala coupe only).
4. Monte Carlo with an optional SS offering the V8 / 6 speed
combo rear wheel drive SS & a LS maybe with carbon fiber alunmium T-tops.

I have the 2003 Impala LS, purchased new, and it's the best Chevrolet I ever owned outside of the 1955 Chevrolet Nomad wagon I had in the fifty's. My first car was a 32 Chevy 2dr sedan.

What's a model SD? Are you in the USA? The 5 year/100,000 mile warranty covers power train parts. The windshield wipers, horn and battery are not parts of the power train. They are covered by the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty on the car and that expired at least a year ago on your car. Did you purchase an extended warranty on the car? You might have some coverage if one was purchased when your mom bought the car. If that's the original battery that came in your car, it's about the average time for a replacement. Your horn problem is probably just a fuse. I don't know what to tell you about the wipers--maybe an electrical problem or the motor may need replacing. You should appreciate the car your mom purchased. If you want something else, go out and get a job and buy one for yourself.

The impalas have two major problems.First brakes wear out fast and rotors and pads cost heavy.Second the trans is junk if you get near 100.000 miles without a major trans problem luck is on your side. There are better full size cars out there you should buy one of them.

I don't think of them at all. I hated the body style of those years, but still I wanted one. I waited until the 2007 model year and bought one. I'm very happy with it. I do all of my own preventive maint on it. I won't take it to Jiffy car butcher and lube.

Over-rated. Nothing all that grand about them. In terms of reliability, all I can say is the newer, the better. Older ones had minor engine probs.

Much more comfy, bigger & better ride than that of the newer version! Generally a good full size car.
