Hi Peter

America is a huge melting pot of many people, and Americans themselves speak to each other according to their own origins. For example, I recently heard one American say to another, "Oh, you Italians make the best pasta- I can't wait to eat at your house." Both people were born and raised in America, but still americans refer to each other according to their family origins.
So when you say that you are Spanish, you can be from any country that has Spanish as its official language, or even born in America with parents from any of these countries.

To resolve your problem, say, "Hi, I'm Peter- I'm from Spain."
Many Americans have been to Spain and love it and the people. Americans really like Spain- anyone who has told you that they do not is ignorant.

Unfortunately, the people from South America have some prejudice due to drugs and other illegal activities.

A person from Spain is a Spaniard, but this is not that commonly used unless in textbooks. Tell everyone you are Peter from Spain and start talking about the wine and the food. Cooking tortilla espanola or paella will get everyone's attention and you will become quite popular.
Many people come to the US from Spain as students and workers so you are not alone.

Ive never heard the word spaniar and Im 70 years old. Americans dont hate the spanish only people who come here and commit crimes and live off the countrys welfare programs. We dont hate the Hispanic either only the above. Hispanic are those people from Mexico, Central America, and South America.

yes probably if you say you are Spanish in the u.s. a lot of people won't know what you are talking about unless you clarify. this, however, does not change the fact that both Spanish and Spaniard mean you are from Spain, so...no argument there. and no, as far as I know u.s. folks don't despise people from Spain--in fact if they know you are from Europe they will probably think it's pretty cool--the folks that are having a hard time right now are folks from Latin America, not Spain. i don't think most u.s. people give a lot of thought to Spain, to tell you the truth.

People from Spain are usually called Spaniards. I have no problem with Spaniards, or any Spanish people, or any nationality at all. I certainly do not despite the Spanish people at all. There tends to be some racism towards Mexican people, I have noticed- no clue why, I do not believe in racism.

I'm Spanish American and I just say I am white, but growing up I use to get into a lot of fights with Mestizos who claimed to be Latin which would be like a black claiming to be Chinese. Say what you are and if they think you are a beaner that is there ignorant problem.
