I think it's important to use history as a framework to evaluate current situations and a way forward. In other words, how can we tell the best way to go forward if we don't first understand where we are and how we got there?

Well now, what do we have here - a philosophy question in the political arena
LOL
I of course consider myself forward thinking. The stuff you have listed here (econ, politics etc) are all only one subject. Unfortunately I dont use any of themas a basis - my basis is myself.
You see, it doesnt matter what economy is out there, what political people are in office etc. What matters is how I use them in my life....if I use them at all. This would necessitate that I understand what I want out of life, what I have done previously in my life to get where I want to be and evaluate what is left to achieve the goal.
For instance - I want to be a millionaire - the state of the country's economy has nothing to do with my achieving that goal. To achieve that goal I shoudl look at what I have doen to get to my current position, what do I need to do different to get to where I want to be - if the dream is big enough the facts dont count so if y being a millionaire really matters to me - I will overcome any obstacle to get what I want.
The same goes for any of the other options you listed. If the dream is big enough I can achieve anything I want in any of those fields.
Thus, I am the only basis and I control everything I do. Its up to me to see what I have done wrong, right etc and make my choices to move forward.

The whole point of thinking is to figure out what's going to happen next.
With me? Everyone thinks with the intention of thinking forward.
Announcing you are a 'Forward Thinker' is what you have to do when the average person is likely to consider your ideas lame.
Calling someone a 'Backwards Thinker' is what you do when you are incapable of making a case against an opposing view.
If someone names themself something like "Progressive"
I take it as a warning I am about to hear a bunch of unsupported lameness.
Sorry to go off on the term. I define progress as the elevation of efficiency. When ever the cost of a service decreases, or given constant price the degree of services increases - that's progress.

Yes, to the extent that I understand clearly that our elections have been hijacked by people who mistakenly believe that they know what is best for us, as if the events of the past seven years hasn't completely repudiated that asinine notion. We've been taken over by people who haven't the foggiest idea of what being an American is.
