I am a pawnbroker in WA. I just love when people think that pawn shops rip them off. We don't make you pawn your stuff. We are a great way to get a few bucks for gas, groceries, diapers...whatever you need until payday. The loans are based on the pawn shop's ability to re-sell an item in case you are unable to pay the loan off. So your $60 item would probably be able to sell for $40 at a pawn shop, IF it's in pristine condition. $30 if it's in crappy condition. Let's say it's in crappy condition. A pawn shop only has so much room to work with when doing a loan, usually we are able to loan 25% of OUR re-sell price. So $10 was generous of them. Without being able to pawn, a lot of my customers would go without food, gas, or not be able to pay their electricity bill. They are very appreciative that I am able to loan them $10 on a DVD player, or $20 on their gold necklace, or $5 on a couple of DVDs. Then there are some people who expect something for virtually nothing.

No. I've bought a few things from pawn shops though; lawnmower, VCR, cameras, tape decks, and a bass guitar amp. It's been several years since I've been to a pawn shop.

Yes, my hubby & I used to pawn our wedding rings every time we would get low on funds. But as soon as we sold a piece of artwork, we'd get them out of hock.
He used to pawn his mechanics tools on a regular basis, so he could buy some silver to make jewelry.

That's how they make money. They know you're in real need of the money, so they offer as low as possible. It's a pretty humiliating experience.
