You can lose a baby without it being classed as a miscarriage actually, but its very rare in single pregnancies...im 4 mnths pregnant and found out 2 weeks ago that it was supposed to be twins but one had vanished, which means the embryo or fetus was rejected by my body and absorbed by me, it is called vanishing twin syndrome but i have done a lot of research into this lately and there are cases where it can happen in singleton pregnancies where everything about the baby, the sac, the waters that are just evolving become absorbed by the mother as if the pregnancy was never there in the 1st place, i myself still class myself as have had a miscarriage, there were 2 babys and now there is one, either way its the loss of a embryo, fetus, baby, hope this helps hun xXx

Expulsion of the fetus from the womb IS a miscarriage - at whatever point it happens. It is quite common for a woman to be pregnant,. miscarry very early in the pregnancy, and not even realize she was pregnant - it would just seem like a late period. But blood analysis (especially if you have problems with one parent being negative and the other positive) can reveal that there has been a previous pregnancy.
Miscarriages can happen at any point from conception on.

When a baby dies but is not miscarried it is called a "missed miscarraige". There are sometimes no symptoms although some women experience a loss of their previous pregnancy symptoms (moirning sickness etc). They normally discovered that the baby has died through an ultrasound scan. Its very emotionally painful for the couple and their family.
The remains of the pregnancy will need to be removed either through a D&C or through medication to induce a miscarriage.
Here is some information about missed miscarriage:

it is possible for the baby to die any time during the pregnancy and not be expelled right away.
my mom had a 2nd trimester miscarriage where the baby was expelled but the doctors said the baby had died quite awhile before that.

This question has already been answered. Outside of an abortion, the only way to lose a baby is through miscarriage regardless of whether or not you expel the fetus.

you can miscarry and not bleed or have any sign of miscarriage until you go to the dr and the heart beat isnt there but that's still called a miscarriage.
