I know an endothermic reaction is when heat is absorbed, but is that a chemical or a physical reaction? Please help me be less confused about science!

Thank You!

Thanks for confirming that it is a chemical reaction. And I'm sorry I meant to say chemical change or physical change. Now, we dissolved ammonium nitrate in water. The water turned colder. Except I was taught that a new substance is always formed during a chemical change. What new substance was formed in this experiment?

Sorry about this but can you please explain it in a way that a 14 year old can understand it? The answers so far are great and simple to understand . but I don't really want to have to spend an hour on wikipedia researching all the terms.

If heat is being absorbed into the reaction, that depends on what is going on. If you are melting a substance, then it is a physical reaction. There is no change in the substances. However, if the energy absorbed into the reaction because of breaking/formation of bonds, changing of reactants to products, then it is a chemical reaction.

Physical Reaction

It's a physical reaction. There are no changes taking place to the molecules within the bacteria. The alcohol in hand sanitizer works by stripping away the polysaccharides (sugars-based polymers) that coat the outside of the bacteria. It's also possible that once this outer layer is removed, the alcohol can act as a dehydrating substance, removing water from the cellular structure of the bacteria (like pouring salt on a slug). I'm not sure whether it would be an exothermic or endothermic reaction. If it's a question of the alcohol evaporating, then it would be endothermic with regards to the alcohol (this is also why your skin feels cool after being rubbed with a alcohol swab), and exothermic with regards to your skin.

A chemical reaction accompanied by absorption of heat from the system is called an endothermic reaction and a reaction which is accompanied by emission of heat is an exothermic reaction. So, it refers to a chemical reaction. Simple heating or cooling of the system is not referred that way.

what's a physical reaction?

i know of physical and chemical change, but only of chemical reactions.

the question itself is flawed.
