It can be if that's what you want. I hate when people give their kids a certain name just because they like the nickname... if you like Maddie, then just name the child Maddie, not Madison or Madeline....
Anyway - I love the name Gertie.... makes me think of the movie E.T., in a good way!
I work with a girl named Becky, and that's what's on her birth certificate.... Becky... not Rebecca.

As much as Abby, Katie, Fanny, Birdie, Bobby, Billy and Jimmy are "names." LOL Certainly, there are plenty of children whose parents do them the disservice of giving them only the childish pet form, but that doesn't necessarily mean others consider them "given names." LOL
If you're wondering because you do like the nickname Gertie, but not the formal name Gertrude, there are others you can consider, of course! Greta, Gretchen, Margaret, Annegret, Gretel, Garnet(te), Gerda, Guinevere, Grainne/Grania or Graciela. Gertie could be used as a pet form of any of those. Yes, it is a name. It is common these days to name someone with hust a nickname. I know someone whose real name is Jenny (not a nickname for Jennifer).
