The difference is that Republicans believe in small government and Libertarians believe in as little government as possible. Libertarians believe that the federal government should have no powers beyond those listed in the Constitution. The government should have no say, in any business matters and should not make laws restricting a persons behavior beyond those which cause harm to others.

Both adhere fairly close to the Constitution. The Libertarian sees no need of any Federal intervention and believe that public services such as police and fire departments should be privatized. Republican concede to the need of certain public programs and understand that on civil rights and other issues that there is a need for federal mandates not clearly outlined in the constitution.

Libertarians and republicans generally agree on fiscal issues, such as lowering taxes and a free market. but where we disagree with republicans is usually the social issues, such as same-sex marriage and separation of church and state. Libertarians believe in protecting individual rights, property rights, and gun rights. we also believe in getting rid of victimless crimes like not wearing a seatbelt and prostitution. i would doubt that a republican would ever support making prostitution legal.
