It's not mathematical, it's just the convention that's used. Here in Australia we have both odd- and even-numbered frequencies.

The reason they're all odd in your area is because your local legislation states that radio stations must be a certain fixed frequency away from each other (e.g. 13 here, 10 for the first answer you got). In your area, that number is even.

Can you give some examples? All AM stations around here are even numbers:
880 WCBS Radio
1010 WINS
660 WFAN
