I have trouble understanding what is really meant when people say - if you want someone to love you, you must have self-love.
Care to elaborate?
Is it spending all the attention you would give to a significant other, to yourself instead?

I've known some people who have had considerable "self-love", and instead of others loving them also, they've just been seen as arrogant.
Why doesn't "self-love" work there?

Self Love means that you respect yourself enough to make the right descions for yourself.
Somehow, in today's world, everyone has confused 'love' with pampering and being lazy, spoiled, greedy, lustful, etc!
BUT that's not what love is. And until you KNOW what real love is, and feel it for yourself. You will never be able to give (or recieve) real love to another person.
This is very true! I hope you decide to go on the search for real love, you will know in your heart when you find it.
I'll give you a hint: it's not a person, place or thing.

Self-love or loving yourself.
Basically, its about having respect and love for who you are and the things you do. Its like saying, if you dont love yourself, and have confidence in your looks, your actions, your beliefs, .. how can you expect anyone else to love these things about you, too?
Put into context (for me, personally) i had problems maintaining relationships because i didnt think i was beautiful and always complained about something (it got old for him, he left). I had no confidence in my intelligence (it got old, he left). And now that i feel like a stronger, more mature, and wiser women... people around me feed off of my confidence. And my fiance says i'm beautiful... instead of saying "no i'm not" i can proudly say "thank you".

Self-love refers to being comfortable with who you are. If you aren't comfortable in your own skin you'll find it hard to make anyone else love you. You have to have self-confidence and respect yourself. You have to know that you are just as good as anyone else and never think that you are undeserving of love. You don't have to be arrogant, but you have to be firm with what you want.

Arrogence is the opposite of Love. Love can only share. Find the root of self in you and Love that. Every other is in possession of self also.

It means you must love yourself before anyone can love you. You must be comfortable with you so they can love you, the real you. Not attention but to know yourself and love yourself enough so they can love you. Get it?
