Clouds have to clear mountain range so they go higher up where the air is cold so the moisture condenses and come back to earth as rain. Believe it get 500 inches of rain in the whole year, rains day and night every day.

It is no more correct as places receiving more rainfall than that of cherapunji have since been identified.Any how, it is the funnel shaped Himalayan ranges there, which trap the moisture laden monsoon winds and clouds making them drop all the water there itself by deflecting them to the western side by more than 90 degrees.

Actually, the wettest spot on Earth is Mt. Waialeale, on the island of Kauai in the Hawaiian island chain. It averages over 460 inches of rain a year. I just got back from there a couple of weeks ago.

first of all you must correct yourself. chrapunji is no more the area with highest rainfall. due to deforestation in cherapunji the title has shifted to mausindram.
