though not a gasoline smell. I stopped the car for a bit then decided to try to make it to a gas station. The smell disappeared. What could it be? (1992 Mazda)

Did it smell like a pile of hot metal or greasy rags burning? The rear emergency brake cable spring could be weak allowing the disc brake pads or shoes to drag in the drums. Occasionally a rear caliper slider pin will freeze from lack of lubrication which wont allow the caliper to fully release when you take your foot off the brake petal. Other times the emergency brake cable itself freezes not releasing the shoes or calipers fully.

You can easily detect hot brake drums or rear rotors after a short drive by putting your hand near them and smelling the immediate area around the brakes.

If it's definately from the back it could be the brakes binding. Try driving around and pulling off any hub cap, put your hand on the hub. If one side is hotter it's binding
Another thing to try is jack up each of the wheels in turn and see if they spin freely
There's a chance it's the wheel bearing, try shaking the wheel if it clonks or feels wobbly drive straight to a garage cause it's dangerous like that, but you'd probably hear noises as your corner too
Hope this helps

Did it operate normally otherwise? Sometimes brake pads get stuck and can start to smell. Later the pads release or wear away and it goes away.

Electrical shorts can give off an acrid smell. Have someone check all your lights to see that they are working.

Also remember that as you drive forward, the smells from the front move to the back. check under the hood for dead animals (sorry, but it happens).

Try looking at your catalatic converter. Which is a part of your exhaust that cleans the fumes and keeps you at regulated emission control sometimes these things clog and can heat up so hot tat they turn cherry red and smell horrible i would highly recommend getting it changed because it is a fire hazzard.
