have to pay for tivo service and have a phone line hooked up to it
I'm happy with standard cable and don't want to pay for 150 channels when I only watch a few so the cable box dvr is out.
...........................................................................................................
I have searched the web for DVR'S and I have found some that are not TIVO the brand I recognize is RCA. Does anyone know if I can hook this up like a VCR and just record the programs that I want without having to subscribe to a service which I refuse to do but i will spend $500 on a DVR that will work the way I want. Thank you in advance for real honest answers.

You can go to Walmart and get one for about $298 (see first link). They also have one for $238 but I wouldn't recommend that one. These also include DVD recorders and for some reason they seem to be categorized as such rather than DVRs.

There are some older models being cleared out that only have analog (soon to be obsolete) tuners. If one would be compatible with your cable service, maybe you could pick one up real cheap. The government is requiring cable companies to maintain analog service until at least 2012. Broadcast TV will go all digital in the US on 2/17/2009.

Your other options are to build one yourself or buy a Windows media center computer with a TV tuner and TV out.

If you do a google for: pvr diy you will find lots of links about building your own DVR.

I agree with "littleone" about waiting for more options. In the meantime, you might be better off just to rent the DVR box from the cable company. I've got Cox Cable, and you can rent the DVR box without having to pay for all the extra channels, just the monthly fee ($9.95). You'd only be renting until more choices become available, so rather than spend up to $500 now for your own box, you'd spend just $10 per month til you find one that would suit you (and be digital ready for 2009!). Another plus for renting, is if you have a problem with the rental, you just get another at no extra charge!

Due to the change from analog to digital there will be a wide range of digital boxes and dvr's on the market around spring of 2008. That is if you want to wait that long.
